Nettle Tea Benefits

NETTLE TEA BENEFITS: INTRO

Nettle Tea is one of my favorite herbal teas that has become increasingly popular over the past year.  This popularity can primarily be attributed to the discovery of strong health benefits.  It doesn’t hurt that the tea has a decent taste that isn’t as bitter as other herbal teas. Nettle tea is made with the leaves of the stinging nettle plant.  The stinging nettle plant has earned its nickname due to the fact that the leaves contain pointy leaves that sting when they come into contact with human skin.

Nettle tea is extremely healthy and contains an abundance of vitamins and minerals.  The primary vitamins and minerals include Vitamin A, Vitamin B Complex, Vitamin C, amino acids, calcium, folic acid, iron, magnesium, manganese, and potassium.  These compounds can help support overall health and boost your immune system.

Allergy Relief

This is one of the main reasons that I have decided to consume nettle tea. Nettle tea can be extremely effective at treating general allergy symptoms caused by “hay fever.” Hay fever occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens floating around in the air, such as pollen.  This can cause watery eyes, a runny nose, and sneezing.  Severe allergic reactions can result in hives and trouble breathing.  If this occurs, you should consult a doctor instead of consuming nettle tea.  As stated above, the tea is effective at reducing mild to moderate allergy symptoms. A recent study completed by the National College of Naturopathic Medicine found that 58% of participants given frozen nettle leaf had a significant reduction in their allergic reactions.  I enjoy it because it doesn’t have some of the side effects of OTC drugs like drowsiness.

Decreased Weight

Many herbal teas can help assist in weight loss, in one way or another.  As stated above, nettle tea is a natural diuretic and laxative.  This helps rid the body of toxins and waste in an efficient manner.  It leads to a healthier and cleaner existence, and many people state that they actually feel lighter and cleaner.

Healthier Sperm (For Men)

This is a unique benefit that is not found in most other herbal teas.  A recent study found that nettle tea actually helped reverse the negative effects that nicotine had on sperm.  Nicotine was administered to mice, and it significantly impacted sperm count and health in a negative way.  Consumption of nettle boosted the health and number of sperm.

Increased Urination

Nettle tea is a natural diuretic and laxative.  It is extremely beneficial for men with BPH.  BPH is caused when a man’s prostate interferes with natural urination.  It can manifest itself in many negative urinary issues. Nettle tea can help reduce these negative symptoms by increasing urination.  This also helps the body expel waste and toxins more regularly and efficiently.

Increased Testosterone

Nettle extracts have been touted for bodybuilders because they appear to impact the level of testosterone in the body. There are several reports that nettle can boost and replace testosterone that has been reduced due to high intensity workouts.  This has led to many bodybuilders consuming nettle tea after their workouts.  More studies need to be completed on humans to completely verify this effect. Many people consume nettle tea due to the increase in libido.

Lower Blood Pressure

Some recent studies have shown that consuming nettle leaves can lower blood pressure.  This has been studied extensively in animals, but more research is necessary on human subjects.  Experts believe that the decrease in blood pressure is linked to the diuretic effects.  Decreased blood pressure can help reduce the risk for heart attack, and it is good for overall health.

Possible Side Effects of Nettle Tea

Nettle tea consumption is not recommended for pregnant women or women breastfeeding or trying to become pregnant.  This tea is considered very safe, but it is always a good idea to consult with your doctor prior to consuming any forms of herbal tea.  This is because the tea can interact with prescription medication.
